Opal Discovery Documented, 1903
The below newspaper articles from June 1903 show the widespread documentation of the discovery of opal at Lightning Ridge at that time.
“For some years reports of discoveries of opal near Walgett have been current, but to-day specimens have been brought into town. Information is given that about 50 miles out an opal field exists, 20 miles in length and three or four miles In breadth, containing a large supply of good payable stone. One specimen, about the size of a watch, is pronounced by experts to be worth about £100, whilst another specimen has just been sold for £50. At present operations are only on the surface.”
